I was in the dark too, just like many European restaurateurs. It wasn't until I joined Rebel Tang that I got the chance to really dive into what this business is all about.

That's when I started working on a website for a cutting-edge startup shaking up the foodtech scene. Breaking down complex stuff into simple terms without falling into jargon is tough, but luckily, I had a great team on this project. An experienced CMO, a sharp CTO, and a top-notch Project Manager, plus the whole management team had our backs.

PROBLEM

It's time to get real

We had to balance real-deal restaurant vibes with Rebel Tang's big dreams. Our goal? Make a slick, easy-to-use website that shows off Rebel Tang's skills. We wanted to highlight their awesome team and wins with cool case studies. All about boosting those conversion rates and getting more people to interact and reach out.

Who is the average restaurateur?

Quick heads-up: We couldn't dive deep with user interviews—restaurateurs are slammed. So, we leaned on our Regional Managers for the inside scoop. From our chats, we've pinpointed three main groups we need to connect with. And guess what? It's not just the restaurant owners calling the shots.

How to simplify it?

After digging into the data, we found out that restaurateurs really see Rebel Tang as a game-changer for their finances, both now and down the road. They also dig facts and figures more than fancy talk. So, we knew we had to keep the website's info architecture straightforward and focused.

We took all that insight and crafted a slick, user-friendly plan. But we didn't just settle there. We really got into our users' heads, questioned our initial thoughts, checked out different user flows, and picked the ones that made the most sense.

We combined our knowledge and worked out a cool plan, which we meticulously organized into a user-centric information architecture. But we didn't stop there. To understand our users, we challenged our assumptions, meticulously examined potential user flows, and selected the most accurate ones.

But how do we visualize it?

Our initial ideas were cool, but we needed to see them live. So, our crew rolled up their sleeves and started cranking out a prototype.

We began with some quick doodles to nail the basic layout. Next, we zeroed in on the user experience, tweaking the path to purchase as we refined our sketches into detailed wireframes.

After teaming up with the Rebel Tang bigwigs, we polished up some high-fidelity wireframes. These bad boys laid the groundwork for the website's final look, blending user-friendly vibes with slick design.

We kicked off the wireframing phase with some quick sketches to get the basic structure down. Then, we dove into user experience and hammered out the conversion flow, making tweaks and refinements with each iteration as we moved to more intricate wireframes.

After collaborating with the key players at Rebel Tang, we crafted high-fidelity wireframes that served as the foundation for the final website design. This step-by-step approach helped us strike the perfect balance between user experience and visual design.

Söhne font family

We picked the Söhne font family to match Rebel Tang's vibrant vibe. It's a modern take on the classic Akzidenz-Grotesk, tweaked by Kris Sowersby to be more balanced and readable, with great kerning and clear diacritics. Söhne comes in various styles and weights, capturing Rebel Tang's energetic and unique personality while nodding to its roots.

Sizzling Sunrise

We went with a bright yellow-orange called Sizzling Sunrise. It’s not just eye-catching with a high contrast ratio against black, making it pop and accessible; it also reflects Rebel Tang's fresh, creative spirit. Like the first light of day, it’s meant to energize and inspire.

Onyx

For a touch of professionalism and elegance, we chose Onyx, a deep gray. It’s perfect for various branding needs, offering high contrast with white for better accessibility. Onyx represents Rebel Tang's commitment to quality and innovation, fitting for a brand that’s all about shaking up the food-tech scene.

Testing Our Prototype in the Wild

We took our functional prototype and let real users at it, simulating their journey from an Instagram ad to our site. Watching them like hawks, we noted every hiccup and snag in their experience. We tracked how they navigated, found info, and interacted with the site, using their feedback to pinpoint exactly where we needed to polish things up for a smoother ride.

The Rebel Tang website project was a wild ride, serving as both a pro gig for my former employer and a key milestone in my "Digital Designer" course, establishing my UI/UX grounding.

Looking back, I'd tweak a few things for a smoother result, but that's just part of learning and growing. Considering my experience level back then, I think I handled it pretty well. Both my old boss and my course mentor gave it a thumbs up, which really confirmed it was a solid step in my early UI/UX career.

Don't try to cram too much into your design. Too many features and elements can be overwhelming and confusing. Instead, focus on creating a clean, uncluttered interface that's easy to use.
